What is wrong if a dial tone cannot be heard when the modem is dialing out?

Make sure the phone cord is plugged in properly. If you have a phone which can be plugged into the jack, plug it in and listen for a dial tone.   If the phone gets a dial tone, the modem could be faulty.   If the phone does not get a dial tone, check other phones in your house and then your Telephone Company.
